Dental Implants

Glen Waverley - dental implants

A missing tooth can affect your appearance as well as your outlook in life. When you have a missing tooth, you tend to cast about for possible quick solutions.

Dental implants are metal, screw-like posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone to serve as replacements for tooth roots.

They fuse with your bones in a process called osseointegration, which allows your bones to grow and cling to your implants.

Because dental implants fuse with your bones, they provide steady and strong support for replacement crowns and/or bridges. They also fill in spaces left by missing teeth, stopping bone degeneration in the mouth.

Advantages of Dental Implants

There are many advantages to dental implants, including:

Improved appearance. Dental implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth. And because they fuse with the jawbone, they become permanent.

Improved speech. With ill-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip in the mouth causing you to mumble.

Dental implants allow you to speak without worrying about appliances slipping.

Comfort. Because they fuse with your jawbone, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your teeth, allowing you to eat your favourite foods with comfort and ease.

Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can restore your smile and make you feel better about yourself.

Improved oral health. Unlike tooth-supported bridges, dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth.

Because nearby teeth are not reformed to support the implant, more of your teeth are left untouched, improving long-term oral health.

Individual implants allow easier access in between teeth, improving oral hygiene.

Durability. Dental implants are very durable and will last many years. With proper care, many implants last a lifetime.

Convenience. Dental implants get rid of the embarrassment and inconvenience of removing dentures, and also the need for messy adhesives to keep them in place.

The Dental Implant Process

The first step in the dental implantation procedure is tailoring your customised treatment plan. The treatment plan focuses on your specific dental care needs.

Next, a small post made of titanium is placed into the socket of the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it fuses around the implant, securing it in the jaw. The recovery period can take up to 6-12 weeks.

Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, a small connector post — called an abutment — is attached to the post to hold the new tooth securely.

To make the new crown, your Preston dentist makes moulds of your teeth and creates a model of your bite. The new crown is based on this model.

Then, the replacement crown is attached to the abutment.

Your Preston dentist also will match the colour of the new crown to your natural teeth. The replacement teeth will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.

Home Care

Dental implants require about the same care as your real teeth, including brushing, flossing, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash, and regular dental check-ups.
