Children are carefree by nature. They are vulnerable and are more prone to injuries than adults.
It is up to us, adults, to look after them to avoid unexpected circumstances.
But we can’t keep an eye on them all the time. We can’t control their movements, and thus, they sometimes suffer injuries from accidents, and these injuries include dental emergencies.
Children’s dental emergencies should be handled calmly to avoid panicking and worsening the child’s condition. As adults, we should know the first aid steps to follow when a child experiences a dental emergency.
To help you, here are the most common children’s dental emergencies and their first aid measures:
Knocked Out Temporary Tooth
This is probably the most common dental injury of children around 6 or 7.
- Clean off the area gently using lukewarm saltwater. Do not scrub or use soap on the affected area.
- Do not attempt to reinsert the tooth back to its socket as this may affect the growth of the permanent tooth that is starting to grow.
- Apply cold compress to reduce redness and swelling.
- Visit your dentist within the first 30 minutes of the injury. Doing so may help stop the occurence of complications.

- Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm saltwater. This helps alleviate the pain and relieve tenderness.
- Apply cold compress to reduce swelling and painful twinges.
- Clear the mouth from food debris.
- Do not give aspirin to your child. This can only add complications.
- See your dentist immediately.
Broken Brackets
Not all children are born with perfectly straight teeth. There are some who need the help of dental braces for many reasons including crooked, overlapping, overcrowded teeth, or “bad bite”.
One of the most common problems that children face as a result of this orthodontic treatment is broken brackets.
- Assess the level of damage on the braces. Check the wires first. If the wire is still attached, gently push it back into place using a cotton swab. Cover the end of the wire with a clean piece of cotton to avoid irritation and cuts.
- Visit your dentist immediately.
Bitten Tongue/ Lips
A child might bite his tongue/lip while eating or during a fall. Even small cuts may cause a large amount of bleeding and discomfort to the child.
- Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm saltwater.
- Apply direct pressure on the injured area using an absorbent material to reduce or stop the bleeding.
- To reduce swelling, bleeding and pain, hold ice over the injured area.
- Visit your dentist immediately.
